Sudoku Tips & Strategies

Sudoku is a fun puzzle game once you get the hang of it. At the same time, learning to play Sudoku can be a bit intimidating for beginners. So, if you are a complete beginner, here are a few Sudoku tips that you can use to improve your Sudoku skills.

1

Look for Easy Wins

Look for rows, columns or 3×3 sections that contain 5 or more numbers. Work through the remaining empty cells, trying the numbers that have not been used. In many cases, you will find numbers that can only be placed in one position considering the other numbers that are already in its row, column, and 3×3 grid.

2

Use the Box Strategy

Break the grid up visually into 3 columns and 3 rows. Each large column will have 3, 3×3 grids and each row will have 3, 3×3 grids. Now, look for columns or grids that have 2 of the same number. Logically, there must be a 3rd copy of the same number in the only remaining 9-cell section.

3

Use Process of Elimination

When you can't immediately see where a number goes, use the process of elimination. Look at each empty cell and determine which numbers are already used in that row, column, and 3×3 box. Often, you'll find that only one number can fit.

4

Start with Easy Difficulties

If you're new to Sudoku, start with easy puzzles to build your confidence and understanding of the patterns. As you become more comfortable with the basic techniques, gradually move up to medium and hard difficulties.

5

Take Your Time

Don't rush! Sudoku is about logical thinking, not speed. Take time to carefully analyze each move. Making mistakes early can make the puzzle much harder to solve later. Use the notes feature to track possible numbers.

6

Practice Daily

Like any skill, Sudoku improves with practice. Try to solve at least one puzzle daily to keep your logical thinking sharp. You'll notice patterns and develop intuition for common Sudoku scenarios over time.

Now that you know a little more about Sudoku, play and enjoy this free online game! Remember, every Sudoku puzzle has exactly one correct solution, so don't give up if you get stuck - there's always a logical next step.
